A day in the life:
Independently analyze audit files.
Use investigative skills and analytical judgement to determine if audit adjustments are needed.
Determine proposed audit methodology. Research and interpret laws, rules, and international agreements.
Assess under or over-reported taxes and fees.
Organize, examine and analyze carrier mileage and fuel records.
Investigate independent sources of information as required when carrier records are incomplete.
Effectively communicate findings and recommendations to the carrier by explaining the audit and applicable laws, rules, and international agreements.
Provide expert testimony at hearings.
Working conditions outside of the office may vary considerably, I.e. from a kitchen table in a carrier’s home to a typical office environment. Use of a personal computer, including extensive use of a computer keyboard and mouse.
Travel may be by air or automobile and will range from all parts of the U.S to Canada.
Depending on specific work assignments, cumulative overnight in state and out-of-state travel up to nine weeks a year is routine, and auditors may be required to be away from home up to two weeks at a time.
